Winning Wednesday - Hear No Evil by Matthew Paul Turner

My Story of Innocence, Music and the Holy Ghost

As a kid, Turner loved music, so he headed to Nashville for college and for work. Hear No Evil is a memoir (college years and beyond) of moving from his strict religious home to a boarder world beyond, especially in music. His college class had a good laugh when he asked who Bob Dylan is and told them he never heard his music. Later, he worked in the Christian music world and provides some interesting inside glimpses.

Turner desires for life to be authentic and honest. He is bothered by added hype and pretense. This is true in his connection with people and with God. Along the way, his journey of trying to understand God/love/grace shows. The writing style is easy and not preachy - he's had too many rules in his childhood to do that to his readers, so parts of it can feel slightly incomplete. He is not an 'answer' person and this thought shows that ..
"I was learning that I don't know a lot of things. And I think a part of faith is learning how to be okay with that."

Turner is funny and he can't help but poke fun at his past and things he encounters - depending on your journey in life, you will enjoy his humor ... or not.

Matthew Paul Turner has a BBA degree in business music. He is the former editor of CCM magazine, and has written for other Christian publications. He lives with his wife and son in Nashville.

I'd love to win this book because I have a feeling that will be the only way I get to read it. Living in a small area means our library sucks.

There are a lot of songs that rush me back in time when I hear them. Every time I hear "Love of a Lifetime" by Firehouse, I think of a guy I went to high school with. I'll leave his name out for personal reasons. Also, every time I hear "When I see you smile" I think of my best friend that died two weeks before her sixteenth birthday. We had so much fun together.

Danielle Athanas :)

The song "Bless the Broken Road" reminds me of our wedding and how much my husband and I feel that God really brought us together. No matter what kind of mood I'm in, it always makes me smile. :)

I am going to sound like the "least spiritual person" on here, but I think of the Beastie Boys' Intergalactic.

Totally reminds me of when I was a teenager and first started driving. I had a system and would play that as loud as I could. Totally thought I was awesome.

Am I too late to win the book?

The song "I Don't Have The Heart" always makes me laugh out loud because I used it on a mix tape to break up with a girlfriend in the 9th grade. OMG, I was so sad.

My name is Lindsay.

"In my heart there rings a melody" reminds me of my friend Bek (also a pk) who would literally sing this as loudly as possible when it was played during church services in our very, very quiet conservative congregation.

"The Gulf War Song" reminds me of college. I had some friends who formed a singing group just so that they could learn this to protest the war.

Songs by Jars of Clay or Nickel Creek tend to remind me of myself. It's good to listen to them if I ever forget (or deny) who I am.
